HelpFinder contains a list of the resources that we have found useful in finding out more about ovarian cancer and how to deal with its effects.

When I started to look around for information about this dreadful condition, what I found was most intimidating. Much of the information is scary but there is always HOPE. Many of these resources offer help, support and guidance and I would urge you to avail yourself of all that Ovacome, the ovarian cancer community and others have to offer. We can fight this TOGETHER, you are not alone.

If this is all very new then I would recommend that you explore FAQs: The most commonly asked questions about ovarian cancer, a distillation of the experience of Ovacome members as well as the knowledge of our advisory board. Alternatively have a browse through the different categories to find a group or resource that meets your needs.

Please note that we can not give medical advice. However, we have secured a discount for Ovacome members to use MedicineNow, an on-line consultation service. Simply quote your membership name or give your name to receive a tailored answer to specific medical questions.

Please add any resources that you know to be missing from the list or tell us what you think of the resources listed here. We would also like to know if any of the links do not appear to be working.

We wish you luck in finding what you are looking for.

44 ½ choices you can make if you have cancer
Sheila Dainow, Vicki Golding & Jo Wright
REVIEW

After Cancer: A guide to your new life
Wendy Schlessel Harpham, M.D. Norton, 1994.
.
"This one was very real to me: how do you get back into a 'normal' life after spending 6 months or more doing nothing but fighting cancer. That is all you have to talk about, because that has been your life. How long will it take to change 'back?' Will things ever be the same again? How long before I feel really good again? Highly recommended!" Kathy Robbins

The Chemotherapy Survival Guide:
Information, suggestions and support to help you get through

Judith McKay, R.N. and Nancee Hirano, R.N., M.S.N. New Harbinger Publications, 1993.
ISBN 1-879237-58-x hardcover, 1-879237-57-1 paper
.
"Although this book is now 4 years old, it is full of information about what chemo is like, how it is given, how to deal with side effects, and getting proper nutrition. The authors are both oncology nurses. They had experts write the chapters on nutrition (a Registered Dietitian), support (an M.D. whose practice is limited to couseling people with chronic or life threatening diseases), and relaxation and visualization techniques (an oncology social worker). It does not make clear, however, that if you drink enough water before, during and after a treatment, you may have minimal or no side effects. It does, however, explain why this is so." Kathy Robbins

Complementary Therapies in Cancer Care
Abridged report of a study produced for MacMillan Cancer Relief by Dr Michelle Kohn
.
If you wish to obtain your own copy of the report, please send an SAE (26 x 35cm) with £1.05 postage to: Michelle Tonks, Professional Resources Programme, MacMillan Cancer Relief, Room C"17, The Cranewell Building, 2 Michael Road, London, SW6 2AD, marking your envelope "Complementary Therapies".

Diagnosis Cancer: Your guide through the first few months
Wendy Schlessel Harpham, M.D. Norton, 1992.
.
"I have not read this book, but based on my reading of the next two, I have no qualms about recommending anything Dr. Harpham has written about living with cancer. She is eminently qualified to write on these topics as a physician, a Mom, and a cancer survivor. " Kathy Robbins

February Light:A Love Letter To The Seasons During A Year Of Cancer And Recovery
Heather Trexler Remoff, St. Martin's $20.95 ISBN 0-312-16839-X
.
"These are reflections spanning the 12 months following the author's diagnosis with ovarian cancer. The author lives in the country, and the beauties of nature, the love of family and friends, and her personal struggle with the beast are all here. The review says the author 'conveys her experiences with admirable honesty.' Sounds like it goes deeper than the average book." Kathy Robbins

Fighting the Silent Killer
Linda & Roy Cecil (published by the authors), £5.75 inc P&P, ISBN 0 9536313 0 3
.

'In 1997 Linda was diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer. In 'Fighting the Silent Killer' Linda and Roy in their individual ways tell how they coped with Linda's illness from the time she started to feel unwell until one year after diagnosis and treatment. They do not present their story as the 'right' way to deal with the problem - it is just what worked for them. They hope though that the book may help others faced with a similar situation.'

The book may be obtained directly from the authors for just £10 with £5 being donated to Ovacome. Contact by mail, tel/fax, or

Gilda's Disease: Sharing personal experiences and a medical perspective on ovarian cancer
M. Steven Piver, M.D. and Gene Wilder. Prometheus Books, 1996. ISBN 1-57392-089-4
.
"This book is a collaboration between comedienne Gilda Radner's doctor and her husband. Between the two, the reader will get both the technical and the personal sides of this disease. A very readable and clearly presented book. Because this book is year old, some of the "possibilities" of the future are already being tested NOW. Probably the best book for a layperson to read who knows nothing about ovarian cancer. All royalties benefit Gilda's Club and The Gilda Radner Familial Ovarian Cancer Registry." Kathy Robbins

Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories that heal
Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., Riverhead Books $22.95 ISBN 1-57322-042-6
.
"I have this book in my hand, and am reading it from cover to cover and then some. Dr. Remen is herself on intimate terms with chronic disease. She has suffered from Crohn's Disease for over 30 years, has an ileostomy, and has had tons of surgery. She KNOWS what it is like to not have one's health. She began as a pediatrician, and 20 years ago began practicing as an psycho-oncologist. She is also a co-founder and medical director of the Commonweal Cancer Help Program in Bolinas, CA. She is also on the faculty of UCSF Medical School. Now that you know her credentials, let me tell you that this lady is a very wise, compassionate human being. I wish every doctor in the world would read this book. I hope you all read it. She puts the Chicken Soup books to shame. Her own patients are either cancer patients, or doctors. I daresay that any doctor who goes to her for counseling turns out to be a much finer doctor, and human being, than ever before. I have already come across your onc's type in this book, Jacquie, so perhaps reading it will at least give us more wisdom, and help us when we come across a doctor who is not in touch. Five Stars" Kathy Robbins

The Median Isn't the Message
Stephen Jay Gould
.
"Stephen Jay Gould is an influential evolutionary biologist who teaches at Harvard University. He is the author of at least ten popular books on evolution, and science, including, among others, The Flamingo's Smile, The Mismeasure of Man, and Wonderful Life.

"As far as I'm concerned, Gould's The Median Isn't the Message is the wisest, most humane thing ever written about cancer and statistics. It is the antidote both to those who say that 'the statistics don't matter', and to those who have the unfortunate habit of pronouncing death sentences on patients who face a difficult prognosis. Anyone who researches the medical literature will confront the statistics for their disease. Anyone who reads this will be armed with reason and with hope." Steve Dunn

"This is a very hard-hitting and honest book about high dose chemo/stem cell transplant treatment.
